Jamaica’s national motto, “Out of Many, One People,” is more than words on a coat of arms — it is a truth I lived growing up. In Jamaica, we celebrate our blended heritage and identify first and foremost as Jamaican.
My own family tree reflects this beautifully. On my paternal side, I traced lineage back to 1799, including William Jones, a European carpenter who lived between Jamaica and England. On my maternal side, I discovered deep Indian roots through two great-great-grandfathers and a great-great-grandmother who came to Jamaica as indentured laborers from India in the mid-1800s.
One of the most moving stories is that of Bassie Dalley (originally Basalat or Basant Ali). Caught in a monsoon in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, he clung to a mango tree while reciting a Muslim dua for protection. That same dua sustained him during his four-month journey across the ocean to Jamaica. He eventually became a plantation overseer (“Busha”) and built a new life on the island.
These stories of resilience, migration, and adaptation run deep in my blood. One grandfather worked as a livestock farmer, the other a tailor and shopkeeper. They raised large families, bought land, served in church, and helped their communities.
Tracing these roots has been both joyful and humbling. There are still gaps that I searched hard to fill but still remain open—especially on the African side of my ancestry — but what I have found fills me with pride in my Jamaican heritage.
Life Lesson: A family tree should not be an unbending dictate for one’s belief system, principles, and actions, but as the roots of a tree meander deep into the ground in search of nourishment, so too can we find strength from the spirit and knowledge rooted in our ancestors.
