My DNA breakdown showed: • Africa – 46% (primarily Ivory Coast/Ghana and Cameroon/Congo) • Asia – 28% (mostly South Asia/India at 26%) • Europe – 24% (including Western Europe, Ireland/Scotland/Wales, and a surprisingly 6% Ashkenazi Jewish) • Oceania – 2%
The Ashkenazi Jewish connection particularly intrigued me. I believe it traces back to my paternal great-great-grandmother Rebecca Walch. Learning this added another rich layer to my already complex identity.
These results deepened my appreciation for Jamaica’s motto, “Out of Many, One People.” Whether African, Indian, European, or a beautiful mix, we stand together as Jamaicans.
This genetic journey reinforced what I have always believed: humanity is one beautiful quilt made of many different patches. The divisions we create by race or color eventually reveal themselves as artificial when faced with our shared history and struggles.
Life Lesson: The human race is a quilt where patches of ethnicity are sewn together to make the whole, each contributing to its beauty, form, and function.
